Inspired by the hat worn by Lorne Greene during the long running television series Bonanza.
Bonanza is a classic American TV series that entertained and inspired millions. Their 14 year run has been syndicated across numerous platforms over the last half a century, a testament to the quality of the show. The series originally ran on NBC from 1959 to 1973 and during its course viewers were entrenched in the weekly adventures of Ben Cartwright and his sons: Adam, Hoss, and "Little Joe" . Whether the episode was comedy or drama, the show touched on controversial topics for it's day discussing racism, domestic violence, and religion.
As the patriarch of the Cartwright family and owner of the Ponderosa Ranch, Ben Cartwright was an ambitious and honest man; tough and stoic. The quintessential American homesteader and single father figure to his 3 sons. Many fans will remember this scene from Season 1 as an example of Ben's righteousness:
Little Joe: "It took 4 hours to bring that thing down."
Ben: "That ain't such a long time little Joe. Not when it took 400 years to grow"
Hoss: Looking up at the trees "400 years. ..that was even before Columbus sailed out of Spain to discover America"
Ben: "Hoss, there were trees living and growing in this forest that were old when Christ pulled fish out of the Sea Galliee."
Hoss: "Don't cut unless you plant."
Ben: "That's right Hoss, that's why we're here, not just to take from the land but to give."
