We made hats for Westworld during the fall of 2014, just before we began work on The Hateful Eight. Unlike the hats seen in Hateful Eight, the Westworld hats were created with a simple design that contrasts the technologically advanced setting. Along with the other wonderful pieces seen on the show, the hats worn by two of the main characters were designed to support recurring themes of identity and good vs. evil that centers Westworld. In the first 10 minutes of the pilot, we watch as James Marsden’s character faces off against Ed Harris’ menacing character in a typical western standoff.
Since the premier of the show we have received numerous inquiries about the hat worn by Ed Harris. Hand crafted in distressed rabbit felt the crown is 4 ¼” tall, 3 ¾” wide and designed with a center dent and finished with a subtle pinch..
Marsden’s hat was based off a sample brought to us and we recreated the look with our set of hat blocks. The ‘telescope’ crown on Marsden’s hat is 3 ¾” tall and wide, while the brim is hand curled on the sides. Finished with a 2-ply matching chocolate brown hatband and you have Teddy’s (Marsden) hero hat. The crown shape and color on this hat is reminiscent of other famous hats like the one worn by Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained and Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars.
Since the premier of the show we have received numerous inquiries about the hat worn by Ed Harris. Hand crafted in distressed rabbit felt the crown is 4 ¼” tall, 3 ¾” wide and designed with a center dent and finished with a subtle pinch. The show’s costume team had a few ideas of the type of hat that Harris wanted and we eventually landed on a uniquely bespoke look that maintains the mysterious identity unique to the character. Finally, the last hat we made was specially blocked for Jimmi Simpson and is the black hat he dons in the last episode of the first season. It made a brief appearance but was a defining moment in the series.
