It is also an exploration into the complexities of what
makes an artist tick, both in his iconoclastic eccentricities,
and his overt self-centeredness, mixed with an addictive
charm, a child-like innocents and an oversized heart which
can turn from summer afternoon warm to winter evening cold
in a flash. What better way to show this mulligan stew of
contradictions than with a hat that defies all logic, if
not gravity itself? If you’ve seen the movie, you’ve noticed
how Bridges’ hat seems to have a life of its own, moving
with the wind, yet keeping its shape, whether he’s lounging
around his backyard with a bottle of wine and chuck of parmesan
cheese, or riding his bike in the moonlight, or running
away from an insane and angry naked model!
In order to recreate this hat, our own Master Hatmaker
Mark Mejia once again worked with the famous Master
Weavers in Tlepehuala, Guerrerro, northeast of Chilpancingo
in South America, the same Master Weavers who are
the exclusive craftsmen for our popular hand-wov en
“Orzuelo’s”, recreations of the hats we made for the
motion picture
"Master and Commander”.
For “The Writer”, they found special indigenous straws
that are
amazingly flexible and resilient. They then
carefully hand-dye it with a mixture of wild tropical
flowers and stone-ground minerals to give the straw
its unmistakable “orange-gold blush”. Mark then crafted
special oversize blocks to conform the weaves to shape
the colossal crown and brim. The hats are finished
with a double two-tone grosgrain ribbon hatband.
“The Writer” also comes with a specially made leather
sweatband, and our won silk-satin lining, along with
a Certificate of Authenticity. On a practical note,
even with its size, “The Writer” is amazingly cool
and light, and there is no other hat under the sun…
to protect you from the sun! So for that outdoor artist
in you, or a loved one… what better gift than this
standout masterpiece?
PLEASE
NOTE: EACH “WRITER” HAT IS MADE
OF SPECIALLY SELECTED HAND WOVEN STRAW OF THE HIGHEST
QUALITY. BECAUSE THESE BODIES ARE CUSTOM MADE TO ORDER
FROM THESE NATURAL FIBERS, THE FINAL OVERALL COLOR
OF THE HAT MAY VARY SLIGHTLY FROM THE ONE SHOWN.
