The term itself is up to all kinds of
arguments, since no one really knows exactly
where the term came from! It started,
some say, as a slang word in Los Angeles around
1912, to describe a wild pitch from a "jazz"
baseball that went all over the place, with
a mind of its own. It may also come from a more
seductive meaning, since "Jazz" is
slang for... well, for "showing the ultimate
intimate affection to the opposite sex"!
Ironically, that could be the best and most
prophetic definition of Jazz yet!
Through the years, as times, styles and people
changed, so did the sound of Jazz, and the look
of the "Jazzman". The Bowler, the
Porkpie, the Beret, they all have defined the
sound and the artist of "Jazz". One
of the most enduring of hat styles was the Fedora,
since it was one of the only hats that both
the president of a bank, an infamous gangster,
and a "working stiff" could all wear.
Like Jazz, it was the "everyman" style.
And it was easily "improvised" on,
like the changes in a Charlie Parker solo. Brim
flipped up or down, either front or back, side
to side, crown shaped into innumerable forms...
whatever you desired to create your own identity.
And somehow, whatever you did... it worked,
and it became your signature.
Therefore, you can't have a Jazz Series of Hats,
without a Fedora. We chose the classic "Rake-Pitch"
style, and made it in our own specially woven
"Parasisol" straw which we custom
hand dye our own "Be-Bop Golden Brown"
in our studio.
Strong, but light, and easily "formed"
into your own improvisation, we call this wonderful
hat, "The Tycoon".
