It's
not easy to steal a movie away from the likes
of
Sandra
Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but Stockard Channing
did just that in the popular cult-classic "PRACTICAL
MAGIC"! As the eccentric Aunt Fran, Channing
was irresistible.
Critics and the public alike
felt she was one of the highlights of a movie
that was jam packed with quirky charming moments.
Based on Alice Hoffman's best-selling
novel, "Practical Magic" follows the
Owens sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman),
as they struggle to use their hereditary gift
for practical magic to overcome the obstacles
in discovering true love (and remove, once and
for all, a very deadly curse against the men
they love!)
Channing's
overwhelming talents alone would have been enough
to steal this movie, but she was helped immeasurably
by her scene-stealing large floppy straw hat,
which seemed to have a mind, and personality
all its own!
The hat and Channing seemed to
fight each other at every turn, reminiscent
of Peter Seller's rebelling hand in "Dr.
Strangelove"!

This unique and delightful hat has become
a favorite with our customers, who consistently
request we recreate it for them. This is a
tall order, for to make this hat, not only
in shape, but to give it that "human"
floppy quality, takes a very special woven
straw.
Usually to find these hats, one must look
carefully in the attics of grand old Aunts,
since the fabric is rarely made any more.
This
is a hat to love and cherish. One warning, however:
this magnificent hat has been known to have
its own wonderful magic powers once you put
it on your head, so we are not responsible for
all the adventures it may take you on... not
to mention all the intriguing people who will
stop to talk to you when they see you wearing
it!

The special weave is made in Switzerland,
where the original motion
picture production hand-woven Paglina Straw
was developed!
The original "Aunt
Fran" was made of a very rare "Paglina"
straw technique which is hand-woven into braids
on special looms in Switzerland. Until recently
it was virtually impossible to find the Swiss
craftsmen who had the skills to reproduce
this amazing Paglina weave... a weave that
seems to literally have a life of its
own! But after an exhaustive search, Baron's
Master Hat Maker, and owner, Mark Mejia, finally
found such craftsmen deep in the Alps of Switzerland,
and h has
made an exclusive arrangement with them to
custom hand weave the braids for the "Aunt
Fran" to his exacting specifications.
The braids are then flown to our shop in New
York, where specially trained needleworkers
sew them into a spiraled body. The body is
then flown to our main shop in Burbank where
it is blocked, sized and finished to your
specifications. Rest assured, this is the
TRUE Paglina weave, and honestly there is
nothing like it on Earth so your "Aunt
Fran" will have the ultimate indescribably
luxuriously soft flamboyant free-flowing "alive"
feel and that infamous tall crown and rambling
brim of the original hat that Channing wore
in the motion picture! It is like no other
hat you've ever worn! The Swiss weavers carefully
dye the straws with indigenous minerals and
flowers to create the special Paglina "shimmer".
Since the bodies are all custom hand dyed
and woven... each one is a unique work of
art. |

note: Because this Paglina straw is not only hand-woven
for us, but also specially hand dyed in natural colors,
each hat will have variations in color.
