It
is always a great challenge when you create a hat
that not only enhances the actor who wears it, but
is an intrinsic part of the plot. For example,
the “Puritan Style” hat with the intricate array
of special spiritual jewels and American Indian
amulets that we crafted for Russell Crowe in the remake of “3:10 To Yuma” became a character onto
itself (which is offered on
this website).
Therefore
to successfully create the Mattie hat for the remake
of "True Grit", you must work backwards.
First thinking of how the hat will evidentially
look on your actor, and then creating a hat that
has the masculine styling of the one her father
would have worn, yet, doesn’t look “dress up” or
silly on the young girl when she wears it as well.
Much thought was put into this hat by the great
Oscar® nominated designer Mary Zophies, so that
indeed it would read as a reminder of Mattie's father,
yet somehow “fit” with her character throughout
the movie.
Mattie Ross’ hat has great emotion impact, since
it is one of the few personal effects she receives
that belonged to her murdered father. She ends up
wearing much of his clothing, including his hat,
both out of necessity, and as a “statement” to Rooster,
and the world, that her father is not to be forgotten,
and more to the point, is to be avenged.

A
glance at the detailed design notes (left)
by costume designer Mary Zophies and Baron's
Master Hatter Mark Mejia, along with the
costume test production photos, shows just
how much thought and development went into
this hat from initial concept to final production
"hero" hat (check out especially
the brim size, color and width of the hatband,
and of course the color of the hat itself).
The
sure sign of professionalism is when something
looks “easy”. It works so well on the character
that you give little thought to all that
went into its creation. This was such a
hat!
We
are therefore proud to offer the "Mattie",
a hat inspired by the one we crafted, and
was worn by Oscar® nominated 15-year-old
Hailee Steinfeld who played the pivotal
character of "Mattie Ross" in
the Coen Brother’s remake of “True Grit”.
A
great hat for the strong little girl growing
up way too fast in ones self, or your daughter,
or grandchild, or godchild, or sister, or
that very special friend.
