We love to
say that "the hat maketh the man",
especially on film! And many directors,
costumers, and especially the actors themselves
understand that. It is always gratifying,
for example, to work with such professionals
as Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp, since
they truly understand how "accessories"
can really help to complete the transformation
into their many fascinating characters,
especially when it comes to their hats.
Another case
in point is Matt Damon who worked hand-in-hand
with Oscar® Nominated "True Grit"
Costume Designer Mary Zophies to design
and Baron's Master Hatter Mark Mejia to
craft the perfect "Texas Ranger"
hat for his character of "LaBoeuf".
His character had served under
the larger-than-life Confederate General Kirby Smith
(in which the expression "Kirby Smithdom" was
coined) which had taught LaBoeuf strength of
character and honor and brash
independence. The hat had to express
these traits, along with his unwavering
authority, and an almost "Dudley
Do-Right" kind of innocence and honesty.

Although Matt's
character displayed none of the "pratfalls" of Mounty Do-Right, his strict sense of integrity,
service, order and pride in his badge does, along
with his motto that he "aims to finish whatever
he starts", had to also be reflected in his
head-gear (though sadly these grand qualities end
up becoming his worse enemy in the story).
The hat also needed to convey
the fact that his character is the complete opposite
of Rooster, who LaBoeuf refers to as a "Texas
brush-popper" among many other "colorful"
expressions. (Check out

The hat's structure and lines had to be clean and
authoritarian, yet, with a bit of élan (LaBoeuf
may be "upstanding", but that doesn't
mean he isn't also an individual with flair!).
And the sweeping "courbure de brise d'océan"
wave shaping of the right side of the brim was a
brilliant touch. The fact that the small slope of
the raked-crown has an understated drama to it also
conveys LeBoeuf's characteristic no-nonsense, waste-not-want-not
spirit.
The hat's design has a universal
charm in that it does not specifically highlight
either a militaristic, law enforcement, or authoritarian
theme, but something more personable, something
that has a beating heart, rather than just
the cold steel of gun and badge.
O ne
major addition to the hat, which has made it one
of the most popular of the whole "True Grit"
collection, is the double-buckle leather hatband.
It is an invention very much inspired by Matt Damon
himself.
Being a major Boston Red Sox fan,
Matt likes to have some kind of subtle reference
to his favorite team in his movies. In this case
he came up with a glorious solution to express his
loyalty and love. The two buckle frontage form a
"B", subliminally representing the most
popular Red Sox old classic logo (mainly seen on
their own caps). But the design also creates strength
of purpose (reminiscent of the "he wore both
a belt and suspenders" idiosyncratic character
trait).
The "LaBoeuf"
comes with a stitched and engraved leather sweatband,
silk-satin lining, our special Lifetime Guarantee,
and a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The "LADY LaBOEUF"
|
|
 Sometimes
you have to wonder if "serendipity"
is just chance, or is it a generous gift from
a celestial anonymous donor! So many times
great inspiration and discovery comes to us
at Baron Hats from interesting accidents,
or even happenstance. A case in point is our
new Exclusive (and instant hit) "Lady
LaBoeuf".
We
were crafting several reproductions of our
"LaBoeuf", and had applied our "shaping"
solution to the brims, so the hats were carefully
set out to dry. It was at that moment,
that several lovely ladies came into the shop. They immediately focused on one of the unfinished "LaBoeufs",
and put it on. The raked crown had a slightly
less "forced" tilt, and the brim
had not be shaped yet in the special
"courbure
de brise d'océan"
wave. They were instantly intrigued by its shape, and especially with the double-buckle band. It was like nothing they had seen before. To them it was alive,
it was both whimsical and dramatic, and most
important, it was sexy as all get out!
When
Master Hatter Mark Mejia came in and saw
them wearing the hat, he instantly
realized he had something extraordinary! Adding
a "demure" tilt to it, and making
some other small adjustments, including accentuating
the wrap-around "plat argenté"
flat-iron straight-plane of the brim, he had
created something totally different from the
strong male "LaBoeuf"!
At
that time, several other women came into the
shop, including a well known actress, and
another celebrity friend and customer, a singer
who is known for her cutting-edge fashion
styling. They both demanded that they also
have this hat made for them. Before the day
was out, over a dozen orders were made for
this new style. Everyone insisted that it
be made with the same sturdy fur felt, special
new brim-shaping, and include the double-buckle.
Thus
the "Lady LaBoeuf" was born. As
with her distant cousin, the "Lady LaBoeuf"
comes with a stitched and engraved leather
sweatband, silk-satin lining, our special
Lifetime Guarantee, and a signed and numbered
Certificate of Authenticity.
